I heard about this series on BBC 4 when listening to the Guardian Science Weekly podcastJim Al-Khalili, on the show talking about some of the great discoveries and advances made in the Islamic world between the 8th and 14th Centuries. recently. They had the presenter and physicist,
Think about it this way - if it has an ‘al’ at the beginning, there’s a fair bet that it was discovered, invented or pushed forward in the Islamic world: algebra, algorithms, alkali, alcohol…
Alhazen (Ibn al-Haythem) is considered one of the founders of the scientific method which we still use today - a good scientist formulates a hypothesis and devises a method to prove it wrong. In this way, we know if a scientific idea stands up to testing. If not, we need to revise the hypothesis and test again.

FIQH- AL-TAHARAH; the Jurisprudence of Purification: (Purity is half of faith) (Muslim) This course will shed light on Islam & Purification ranging from its importance, virtues, classification, philosophy etc. It will outline the essentials of how to maximize one’s wudu experience both in form and spirit. Traditional fiqh chapters such as the invalidators of Ablution, Tayammum , Types of water, Istinja, Masah on regular and leather socks, will be taught through authentic Prophetic traditions. Contemporary challenges as well as solutions will be explained, for example, do I really have to put my foot in a public sink? FIQH – AL-SALAH; The Jurisprudence of Salah: (Pray as you have seen me pray) (Tirmizi) This course will enhance the love between you and your Creator. Besides explaining every function of Salah from A-Z( your intention to the supplications after prayer) through Prophetic Orations, you will begin to celebrate the intimate aspect of conversing with your Lord in Salah as the prayer is the Mairaj; Ascension of the believer. The course will also provide extraordinary clarity and understanding on issues such as reciting the ameen softly or loudly, the posture of standing in prayer, raising of the hands, where/how to fold the hands etc. Do I place my hands on my chest, below the navel, or above it? TAFSEER -AL – QURAN; Exegesis: (What, do they not ponder the Qur’an?) (Muhammad 47:24) The Language of the Quran and paradise, both is and will be Arabic. Thence, Allah has stated multiple times that the Quran was revealed in the clear language of Arabic. The honor and tribute of Arabia during the time of Mohammed (saw) was the Arabic language, thus the Quran challenged the most eloquent and well versed Arabs the world has ever seen to bring forth a single verse comparable to the Quran and all of their efforts were in vain. This course will provide an in depth study of the miraculous language of the Noble Quran along with commentary on surahs regularly recited throughout the course of ones day and prayers. QIRA’AH; Recitation: (...and recite the Qur'ân (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style) (Muzzamil 73:4) In Sahih Al-Bukhari, it is recorded from Anas(ra) that he was asked about the recitation of the Messenger of Allah(saw) , so he replied, "He used to elongate the letters.'' Ibn Jurayj reported from Ibn Abi Mulaykah(ra), who narrated from Umm Salamah(ra) that she was asked about the recitation of the Messenger of Allah (saw), so she said, "He used to pause in his recitation, verse by verse (Ahmad, Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi). It has been narrated from Ibn Mas`ud that he said, "Do not scatter the (recitation of) Qur'an out like the scattering of sand, and do not rush through it like the hasty recitation of poetry. Stop at its amazing parts and make your heart move with it. None of you should let his concern be to reach the end of the chapter.'' (Al-Baghawi). You will sweeten your heart and tongue by learning how to correctly articulate the beautiful words of Allah through studying the science and art of Tajweed in this course. AHADEETH; Traditions of the Messenger (saw): And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, leave it. And fear Allah: truly Allah is severe in punishment (Hashr 57;7) Not a single Islamic study circle dars, halaqa or meeting draws to a close except the words of the Prophet (saw) are mentioned. Have we ever asked ourselves what is a hadeeth? Are ahadeeth restricted to the orations of the Prophet (saw) or do they encompass other factors such as his actions or perhaps even silence? Are we dependent on Ahadeeth? One may argue that The Quran is enough? What is the correct meaning of a weak or authentic hadeeth? Did the Prophet (saw) categorize ahadeeth the way we do today? Is a hadeeth not reported in Bukhari and Muslim at a disadvantage? This course will illustrate the preservation, origin, classification and the general science of Ahadeeth JUMU’AH; Friday prayer: (The day of Friday is more revered and exalted than the day of Fitr& Adha, (the two Eids) (Ibn Majah) Time is flying! The good news is that you’re the pilot. Week after weeks have gone by in our lives and unfortunately the Friday prayer has become ritualistic, thus empty of any spiritual upliftment and remedies. This course will guide us in the preparation of Jumu’ah commencing from the eve of Thursday night up until the last few seconds of Friday’s sunset. From frequently reciting Salat & Salam to applying perfume, reciting Surah Al Khaf to the minute details of the Sermon. After studying the course material, you will begin to look forward to Fridays for the right reasons! SELF RECTIFICATION & SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT: Rasul Allah (sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said:” Beware, in the body there is a piece of flesh; if it is sound, the whole body is sound and if it is corrupt the whole body is corrupt, Beware! It is the heart."( Muslim) What benefit is of that knowledge which does not bring us closer to Allah? This course will direct one as to how to check our intentions, strengthen our sincerity, correct our Islamic mannerism etc. The instructors will define a few diseases of the heart and prescribe a cure for those through the teachings of the Messenger (saw). "These hearts become rusty just as iron does when water affects it." On being asked what could cleanse them; he replied "A great amount of remembrance of death and recitation of the Qur'an." (Tirmidhi)
As the language in which the sacred Quran was revealed, and in which the majority of Islamic scholarship is conducted, Arabic occupies a very special and beloved position in the very soul of the Ummah. It is both the language in which we pray to our Creator and the gateway to the knowledge that enables us to properly fulfill our duties as Muslims. Thus it is a great honor that The Toronto Shariah Program is blessed to re-offer this summer a two month “Arabic Intensive Program” in the sciences related to the Arabic language using a classical approach emphasizing Sarf (Arabic Morphology) and Nahw (Arabic Syntax), with a view towards further study using source materials in their original Arabic. Course Content: 80% Sarf and Nahw. 20% Tafsir and Hadith Studies.
